Basketball Game Preview: Newark Memorial Cougars vs. Arroyo Grande Eagles

The Newark Memorial Cougars will be taking part in a tournament against the Arroyo Grande Eagles at 7:45 p.m. on Monday. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Newark Memorial is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They walked away with a 53-40 win over Foothill on Saturday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Cougars.

Newark Memorial got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Angelina Baca out in front who posted 19 points. Baca continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Mai Weeks, who had 12 points.

Meanwhile, Arroyo Grande waltzed into their matchup on Saturday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They claimed a resounding 72-27 win over the Vikings. The Eagles have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won five games by 27 points or more this season.

Arroyo Grande is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven contests, which provided a nice bump to their 7-3 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 56.3 points per game. As for Newark Memorial, the victory got them back to even at 5-5.

Newark Memorial came up short against Arroyo Grande in their previous matchup back in December of 2022, falling 55-45. Can Newark Memorial avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
