Basketball Game Preview: Meridian Mustangs vs. Superior Wildcats

The Meridian Mustangs will head out to face off against the Superior Wildcats at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Meridian is looking for their season's first victory.

Meridian is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They lost 53-29 to Sterling on Tuesday. The Mustangs were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 26-4.

Despite the loss, Meridian saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Jetta Stewart posted 11 points and seven rebounds.

Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when Superior took on Blue Hill on Tuesday. The Wildcats fell 27-21 to the Bobcats.

Meridian will have to keep a close watch on Maddi Bargen and Ava Kirchhoff, a pair of players who had a big impact on Superior's prior game. Bargen dropped a double-double with ten points and 11 boards, while Kirchhoff put up four points and nine rebounds. With that strong performance, Bargen is now averaging an impressive 2.4 steals per game.

Superior's defeat dropped their record down to 0-5. As for Meridian, their loss dropped their record down to an identical 0-5.

Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Meridian has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 25.2 boards per game. However, it's not like Superior struggles in that department as they've been averaging 25.6 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.

Meridian took a serious blow against Superior in their previous meeting back in December of 2024, falling 57-12. That matchup was all but decided by halftime, at which point the Mustangs were down 35-9.
