Basketball Game Preview: Marquez Gladiators vs. Maywood CES Wolfpack

The Marquez Gladiators are taking a road trip to take on the Maywood CES Wolfpack at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Both teams are coming into the matchup red-hot, with Marquez sitting on three straight wins and Maywood CES on four.

Marquez is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They breezed by Torres to the tune of 63-18 on Thursday. Marquez's victory was all the more impressive since the Toros were averaging only 28.9 points allowed on the season.

Corshell Vaughn was her usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 27 points and 14 boards. She has been hot for a while, having posted 11 or more rebounds the last 31 times she's played. Magaly Gonzalez was another key player, going 8 for 16 on her way to 16 points in addition to eight boards and five steals.

Marquez smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in three consecutive games.

Meanwhile, you're bound to get a positive result if you outscore your opponent every quarter, and that's exactly how it played out for Maywood CES on Thursday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that they blew Maywood Academy out of the water with a 53-24 final score. The Wolfpack have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won four contests by 26 points or more this season.

Marquez pushed their record up to 9-7 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. Those victories came thanks to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 15.3 points per game. As for Maywood CES, their victory bumped their record up to 4-2.

Marquez lost to Maywood CES on the road by a decisive 43-24 margin in their previous matchup back in January of 2024. Can Marquez avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
