Basketball Game Preview: Mira Costa Mustangs vs. Cypress Centurions

The Mira Costa Mustangs will square off against the Cypress Centurions at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday. Both come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Mira Costa took a loss when they played away from home on Saturday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Tuesday. They strolled past Fountain Valley with points to spare, taking the game 58-44. Given the Mustangs' advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 25th, while the Barons are ranked 200th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Meanwhile, Cypress entered their tilt with La Serna on Friday with four consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with five. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past the Lancers 51-48. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Centurions have posted since January 22nd.

Cypress found their leader in sophomore Sarina Ulep Rodriguez, who posted 19 points in addition to six rebounds and three steals. Another player making a difference was Sophia Cunha, who put up seven points and 18 rebounds.

Mira Costa has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games, which provided a nice bump to their 7-2 record this season. As for Cypress, their victory bumped their record up to 6-2.

Everything came up roses for Mira Costa against Cypress in their previous matchup back in December of 2023, as the squad secured a 69-34 win. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was Cypress' Isabella Caceres, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and ten boards. Now that she won't be playing on Thursday, will it be easier for Mira Costa to walk away with another win? There's only one way to find out.
