Softball Recap: Smoky Hill Wins Going Away Against Doherty

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Grandview, Smoky Hill was happy to have turned things around on Saturday. They were the clear victors by a 12-6 margin over the Doherty Spartans. The high-scoring effort was just what the Buffaloes needed considering they were shut out in their previous game.

Kadynce Schutt was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and four unearned) runs off eight hits. Those nine strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her five plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs.

In other batting news, Smoky Hill got a massive performance out of Nikiah Light, who went 3-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and one double. Those four RBI gave Light a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Ellen Paris, who went 3-for-5 with two runs, two doubles, and one stolen base.

Smoky Hill kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Doherty only managed ten.

Smoky Hill's record is now 7-12. As for Doherty, they are on a nine-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-13.

Looking ahead, Smoky Hill will venture away from home to take on Overland at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Doherty, they will welcome Pueblo West at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Spartans' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Cyclones have averaged an impressive 9.1 runs per game this season.
