Football Recap: West Mesa Skates Past Atrisco Heritage Academy with Ease

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against La Cueva, West Mesa was happy to have turned things around on Saturday. They really took it to the Atrisco Heritage Academy Jaguars for the full four quarters, racking up a 55-14 win. The home team had taken home the W every time these teams have met since March 26, 2021, but that streak is no more.

It was another big night for Victor Aguilar Jr., who rushed for 273 yards and four TDs while picking up 11.9 yards per carry. With that strong performance, he is now averaging an impressive 120.5 rushing yards per game. Marcos Ochoa was another key player, gaining 114 total yards and two touchdowns.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: West Mesa was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 461 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since back in August of 2024.

West Mesa didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off five passes before the game was over. Andrew Esparra led the group effort, picking up two of those interceptions all by himself.

West Mesa's victory was their first in the district, bumping their district record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 2-4. As for Atrisco Heritage Academy, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-5.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. West Mesa will welcome Albuquerque at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. That game will pit two of the most dominant backs against one another: Aguilar Jr. and Alberto Landeros. As for Atrisco Heritage Academy, they will host Santa Fe at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Demons will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more points each matchup than the last.
