Recap: Helix Highlanders vs. Mount Miguel Matadors

The Helix Highlanders scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Tuesday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Mount Miguel 76-28 at home. Helix has made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won nine matches by 22 points or more this season.

Helix's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Valerie Marquez led the charge by dropping a double-double on 14 points and 16 rebounds. Marquez has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last six times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Jordyn McMillan, who scored 21 points along with nine rebounds.

Despite the defeat, Mount Miguel saw an underclassman step up: Jaylene Hughes scored 26 points. That was a full 92.9% of Mount Miguel's points, marking the 21st time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.

The win was the sixth in a row for Helix, bringing their record for this year to 15-4. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 57.5 points per game. As for Mount Miguel, they are on a eight-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-19.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Helix will take on Grossmont at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Mount Miguel won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Liberty Charter at 5:30 p.m. on January 24th. Liberty Charter is hoping to put an end to a five-game streak of away losses.
