Basketball Recap: Martina Griffin's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Oceanside over Torrey Pines

Oceanside suffered their closest defeat since January 18th on Friday. They fell just short of the Torrey Pines Falcons by a score of 42-40. While losing is never fun, the Pirates can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 430th, while the Falcons are ranked 194th).

Several Pirates players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Martina Griffin, who posted 15 points in addition to five assists and five rebounds. Brooklynn Davis was another key player, putting up ten points and six boards.

Charley Pegg continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Torrey Pines, posting eight points and seven steals. Pegg has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last four times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Lavi Parraway, who scored eight points.

Oceanside is on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 11-13. As for Torrey Pines, they are on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 13 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 19-7 record this season.

Coming up, Oceanside will take on La Costa Canyon at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Torrey Pines, they will be playing at home against Rancho Buena Vista at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Torrey Pines is on a ten-game streak of home wins (dating back to last season), Rancho Buena Vista a three-game streak of away wins -- so someone will have to leave a streak behind on the court.
