Basketball Recap: Pioneer's Win on Friday Extends Winning Streak to Three

Pioneer entered their tilt with Lakewood on Friday with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. They rang in the new year with a 63-52 win over the Lakewood Lancers. This was payback for the Titans, who suffered a 58-53 loss the last time these two teams met.

Pioneer got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Aryanna Reyes out in front who went 6 of 12 en route to 15 points and four steals. Reyes has been hot, having posted two or more steals the last five times she's played. Another player making a difference was Alissa Belen, who went 7 for 15 on her way to 19 points.

Pioneer was working as a unit and finished the game with 20 assists. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their assist total in five consecutive games.

Defeat or not, Lakewood got some senior leadership from Nyemah King and Amy Rubio. King went 8 of 18 en route to 20 points and six steals, while Rubio dropped a double-double on 18 points and 13 boards. That was a full 38.5% of Lakewood's points, marking the ninth time in a row she's posted more than a third of the team's points. Aaryn Hunter was another key player, putting up four points.

Pioneer's record now sits at 4-7. As for Lakewood, their loss ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 12-5.

Pioneer has already played their next match, a 98-4 win against Glenn on the 7th. As for Lakewood, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 62-17 victory against Millikan on the 8th.
