Basketball Recap: Jaylene Hughes' Big Game Can't Quite Lead Granite Hills over Torrey Pines

Granite Hills suffered their biggest defeat since December 5, 2024 on Friday. 2025 welcomed they with a 61-37 loss courtesy of the Torrey Pines Falcons. While losing is never fun, the Eagles can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 516th, while the Falcons are ranked 198th).

Granite Hills' loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jaylene Hughes, who posted 18 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Kerstena Tomika, who earned ten points.

Harper Kelley was nothing short of spectacular for Torrey Pines: she dropped a double-double on 12 points and 21 rebounds. With that strong performance, Kelley is now averaging an impressive 8.2 boards per game. Another player making a difference was Katie Tal, who went 6 of 13 on her way to 15 points.

With the defeat, Granite Hills broke their three-game winning streak and moved their record to 6-6. As for Torrey Pines, their win bumped their record up to 9-5.

Granite Hills wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 55-37 loss against Mater Dei Catholic on the 6th. Torrey Pines has also already played their next game, a 57-25 victory against Central on the 4th.
