Football Preview: Montgomery Bears vs. Lake Creek Lions
Montgomery and Lake Creek are an even 3-3 against one another since November of 2018, but not for long. The Montgomery Bears will venture away from home to face off against the Lake Creek Lions at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Montgomery is currently enjoying a perfect season and no doubt wants to keep things rolling.
While Montgomery didn't have the best season last year (they finished 2-8), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They blew past Dayton 47-14 at home on Friday. The result was nothing new for the Bears, who have now won three matches by 25 points or more so far this season.
Reggie Williams was his usual excellent self, rushing for 136 yards and three touchdowns on only ten carries, while also throwing for 113 yards and a touchdown while completing 75% of his passes. He got the majority of those rushing yards when he took off on a run that went for an incredible 71 yards.
Montgomery wouldn't let Dayton keep a hold of the ball as they managed to force two fumbles. Montgomery can thank Kaden Mcmillian and Seth Wilson for forcing both of them. Layne Vandiver was another major factor on D, picking up a sack and making seven total tackles (3.0 for loss).
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Montgomery was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 232 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 203 rushing yards in six consecutive games dating back to last season.
Meanwhile, Lake Creek's game on Friday was all tied up 42-42 at the half, but sadly for them it didn't stay that way. They fell to Port Neches-Groves 62-56.
Montgomery's victory bumped their record up to 4-0. As for Lake Creek, their loss ended an eight-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 2-2.
Montgomery and Lake Creek were neck-and-neck in their previous matchup back in September of 2023, but Montgomery came up empty-handed after a 36-35 defeat. Can Montgomery avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
