Preview: Oxnard Yellowjackets vs. Ventura Cougars
Oxnard and Ventura are an even 5-5 against one another since January of 2019, but not for long. The Oxnard Yellowjackets will be playing in front of their home fans against the Ventura Cougars at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Oxnard comes in on seven and Ventura on five.
Last Thursday, even if it wasn't a dominant performance, Oxnard beat Dos Pueblos 55-49.
Oxnard's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Mikayla Oliver, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and ten rebounds. That's the first time this season that Oliver pulled down eight or more rebounds. Kayla Lumas was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with eight rebounds and seven steals.
Even though Ventura has not done well against Chaminade recently (they were 0-4 in their previous four matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Saturday. Ventura enjoyed a cozy 78-62 win over Chaminade. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Oxnard is on a roll lately: they've won 12 of their last 13 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 17-3 record this season. As for Ventura, their victory was their 14th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 17-3.
Oxnard came up short against Ventura when the teams last played back in January of 2023, falling 63-57. Can Oxnard avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
