Basketball Recap: Mater Dei Catholic Crusaders vs. Olympian Eagles
While the Mater Dei Catholic Crusaders couldn't quite beat the Olympian Eagles on Friday, the two-point margin was a huge improvement compared to the 21-point loss they were dealt last Wednesday. Mater Dei Catholic fell just short of the Eagles by a score of 36-34. Mater Dei Catholic has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Mater Dei Catholic lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Awen Carrillo, who scored four points along with ten rebounds and two blocks. Another player making a difference was Promise Martin, who scored five points along with six rebounds and three steals.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Olympian to victory, but perhaps none more so than Alyssa Martin, who scored five points along with 19 rebounds. Alyssa Agpaoa was another key contributor, scoring 16 points along with two steals.
Mater Dei Catholic has not been sharp recently as the team's lost three of their last four games, which put a noticeable dent in their 9-13 record this season. As for Olympian, their win ended a five-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 13-11.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Mater Dei Catholic won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against the Dons at 6:00 p.m. on February 3rd. Cathedral Catholic presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than the Crusaders in California (the Dons are ranked 208th, while the Crusaders are ranked 476th). As for Olympian, they won't have much time to rest: their next match is against the Falcons at 4:30 p.m. on February 3rd. Scripps Ranch is coming into the match hot, having won their last six games.
