Basketball Recap: El Capitan's Luck Takes a Turn for the Worse on Friday

It was a good run, but El Capitan unfortunately witnessed the end of their five-game winning streak on Friday. They took a 44-38 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Grossmont Foothillers. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Vaqueros of the 56-38 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in February of 2024.

When it comes to explaining why El Capitan lost, don't look at Paige Worthem. Despite the final result, she almost dropped a double-double on 16 points and nine rebounds.

Grossmont found their leader in sophomore Aakash Price, who almost dropped a triple-double on 27 points, 17 boards, and nine steals. Price is crushing it when it comes to rebounds: she's pulled down at least nine every time she's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Esther Agoh, who posted two points in addition to eight boards and four steals.

El Capitan's loss was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 3-1 and their overall record down to 19-4. As for Grossmont, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 17-3.

El Capitan and Grossmont should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps California Rankings. El Capitan (ranked 99th) will meet Scripps Ranch (ranked 238th) at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Grossmont will face off against Steele Canyon at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday up 618 places (119 vs. 737).
