Softball Game Preview: Dougherty Trojans vs. Crisp County Cougars

Dougherty is 0-10 against Crisp County since October of 2016 but things could change on Wednesday. The Trojans will look to defend their home field against the Cougars at 5:30 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.

On Monday, Dougherty got the win against Mitchell County by a conclusive 22-1. The game marked the Trojans' most dominant win of the season.

Jalexi Thomas was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and only one walk). Thomas was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with one home run and three runs. That home run marked the first that she has launched this season.

In other batting news, Jazlyn Turner was incredible, firing off two home runs, six RBI, and four runs while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. That's the most runs she has posted since back in September. Dariona Simmons was another key player, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with three stolen bases, four runs, and two RBI.

Dougherty lost a few balls and finished the game with three home runs. That's the most home runs they've managed all season.

Meanwhile, Crisp County narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Worth County 14-12. That's two games straight that the Cougars have won by exactly two runs.

Crisp County's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 8-12. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games. As for Dougherty, their win bumped their record up to 8-17.

Dougherty suffered a grim 11-0 defeat to Crisp County in their previous meeting back in August of 2023. Can the Trojans avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
