Basketball Recap: San Diego Takes a Loss

On Saturday, the San Diego Cavers came up short against the Carlsbad Lancers and fell 61-50. While losing is never fun, the Cavers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 684th, while the Lancers are ranked 301st).

Despite the loss, San Diego saw an underclassman step up: freshman Gianna Woodson posted 11 points along with six steals and five rebounds. Woodson is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last eight games she's played. Another player making a difference was Seniaah Simms, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 15 boards.

San Diego has traveled a rocky road recently having lost four of their last five matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-11 record this season. Their recent woes sure aren't a result of their performance when it comes to three-point shooting accuracy: their three-point shooting accuracy was 26.8% in those games and 0% outside of them. As for Carlsbad, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 9-8.

San Diego didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 65-24 win against Academy of Our Lady of Peace on the 14th. Carlsbad has also already played their next contest, a 59-54 defeat against Torrey Pines on the 15th.
