Football Recap: Lincoln Southwest Gets the Win

After low-scoring totals in their previous four matchup, Lincoln Southwest brought some dynamite into their most recent game. Their defense stepped up to hand the South Sioux City Cardinals a 56-0 shutout on Friday. The Silver Hawks pushed the score to 49-0 by the end of the third, a deficit the Cardinals had no chance of recovering from.

Luke Mitchell had an outrageously good game as he rushed for 67 yards and two scores on only six carries. Those two rushing touchdowns gave him a new career-high. Another rusher making a difference was Cam Rakowsky, who rushed for 60 yards and one TD on only five carries.

Special teams also played a big role in the game for Lincoln Southwest, adding 14 points to the final score. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Jackson Mowitz, who ran a punt back for a touchdown.

Another reason for the win was Lincoln Southwest's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for three sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Christian Fitzgerald, Tanner Schroder, and Nathan Hill, who each picked up one sack apiece. Colton Hoy got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.

Lincoln Southwest's first win this season bumped their record up to 1-4. As for South Sioux City, they dropped their record down to 1-4 with the defeat, which was their third straight at home.
