Basketball Game Preview: Helix Highlanders vs. San Marcos Knights

The Helix Highlanders will head out on the road to challenge the San Marcos Knights at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Both come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Helix proved they can win big last Friday (they won by 25) and on Friday they proved they can win the close ones too. They skirted past Steele Canyon 48-45. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Highlanders have posted since January 19, 2024.

Michaelle Whyte and Jordyn McMillan were among the main playmakers for Helix as the former posted 15 points along with five boards and three steals and the latter had 12 points and three blocks. McMillan has been hot recently, having posted two or more blocks the last three times she's played. Another player making a difference was Maliyah Johnson, who put up three points in addition to 13 rebounds and three steals.

Helix smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in four consecutive games.

Meanwhile, San Marcos' game on Friday was all tied up 20-20 at the half, but luckily for them it didn't stay that way. They strolled past Mt. Carmel with points to spare, taking the game 54-39. The victory continues a trend for the Knights in their matchups with the Sundevils: they've now won four in a row.

San Marcos pushed their record up to 19-9 with the win, which was their fifth straight at home. They've dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 41 points. As for Helix, their record is now 11-12.

Helix ended up a good deal behind San Marcos when the teams last played back in November of 2023, losing 62-48. Thankfully for Helix, Kyra Quinn (who scored 27 points along with six boards and four steals) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
