Basketball Recap: Point Loma Comes Up Short

Point Loma was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their fifth straight defeat. They had to suffer through a 80-9 loss at the hands of the Christian Patriots. The contest marked the Pointers' lowest-scoring matchup so far this season.

Point Loma's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Hannah Smith, who posted four points and eight rebounds. Smith is on a roll when it comes to boards, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last five games she's played.

Even though they lost, Point Loma smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in three consecutive games.

Christian's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Maepon Johnson, who dropped a double-double on 25 points and ten steals. The dominant performance gave Johnson a new career-high in steals. Another player making a difference was Leah Speers, who scored 23 points along with eight steals and six assists.

Point Loma's defeat dropped their record down to 4-12. As for Christian, the victory was the seventh in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 13-4.

Point Loma has already played their next match (against Patrick Henry), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. Christian didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 55-44 win against El Cajon Valley on the 18th.
