Basketball Recap: Saturday's Defeat Ends Villa Park's Winning Streak

After flying high against Yorba Linda on Friday, Villa Park came back down to earth. The game between the Villa Park Spartans and the Francis Parker Lancers didn't end well, with the Villa Park Spartans falling 54-37. While losing is never fun, the Spartans can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 64th, while the Lancers are ranked 17th).

Villa Park lost on Saturday despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Bailey Roczey, who posted seven points in addition to seven rebounds and three steals. Roczey is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last six games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Madelyn Martinez, who had eight points.

Francis Parker was led to victory by Brieana Brown and Isabella Riddle. Brown dropped a double-double on 23 points and 16 rebounds, while Riddle almost dropped a double-double on 16 points and nine rebounds. Brown continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last four games she's played. Another player making a difference was Riya Khushu, who put up two points.

With the loss, Villa Park broke their five-game winning streak and moved their record to 15-4. As for Francis Parker, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matches, which provided a nice bump to their 9-5 record this season.

Villa Park will venture away from home to take on Sonora at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Francis Parker, they will welcome Victory Christian Academy at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Francis Parker is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 53.6 points per game this season.
