Preview: Lynwood Knights vs. Downey Vikings

Lynwood is 8-2 against Downey since January of 2019, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Friday. The pair will face off at 5:15 p.m. on January 26th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Both teams come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Lynwood scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Saturday. They came out on top against Long Beach Poly by a score of 73-65. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.

It was another big night for Taliyah Mcferson, who dropped a double-double on 28 points and 12 rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points she has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Shanilah Ewing, who scored 15 points along with five rebounds and two steals.

Meanwhile, even if it wasn't a dominant performance, Downey beat El Dorado 49-45 on Saturday.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Downey to victory, but perhaps none more so than Salma Garcia, who scored ten points along with three steals. Garcia has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last three times she's played. Another player making a difference was Taleyah Oporta, who scored seven points along with two steals.

Lynwood is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last nine games, which provided a nice bump to their 12-11 record this season. As for Downey, they pushed their record up to 14-11 with that win, which was their fourth straight at home.

This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Lynwood have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 30.7 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Downey struggles in that department as they've been averaging 31.3 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.

Lynwood came up short against Downey when the teams last played on January 10th, falling 39-33. Will Lynwood have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other basketball content.
