Basketball Recap: Montgomery Takes a Loss

Montgomery managed to keep up with Cathedral Catholic until halftime on Tuesday, but things quickly went downhill from there. The Aztecs lost 65-45 to the Dons. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Aztecs of the 62-27 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in December of 2023.

When it comes to explaining why Montgomery lost, don't look at Paula Zumstein. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double with 16 points and ten boards. That was a full 35.6% of the Aztecs' points, marking the fourth time in a row Zumstein has posted more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Genevieve Whitehead, who had ten points and four steals.

Cathedral Catholic was led to victory by McKinley Hanlon and Bianca Slone. Hanlon shot 9-for-15 from downtown and dropped a double-double with 34 points and 11 rebounds, while Slone almost dropped a triple-double with 22 points, 17 boards, and nine blocks. Those 34 points gave Hanlon a new career-high. Khloe Lopez was another key player, putting up two points along with nine rebounds and five steals.

Montgomery's defeat dropped their record down to 4-2. As for Cathedral Catholic, the win got them back to even at 2-2.

Montgomery wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 46-44 victory against Helix on the 4th. As for Cathedral Catholic, they will square off against Torrey Pines at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The Dons' defense better be ready for this one: the Falcons have averaged an impressive 50.4 points per game this season.
