The biggest upset of the week belonged to Watertown-Mayer, who took down 49th ranked Montgomery-Lonsdale, 35-7. Joe Reinert ran for 153 yards and caught two passes for 13 yards in the win.
Mayer Lutheran was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from fourth to second in Minnesota River. The Crusaders beat Jordan 34-22 earlier in the week.
Mayer Lutheran's dynamic duo of Jeremiah Grimsley and Joel Burfeind proved tough for the Hubmen/Jaguars to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Grimsley threw for 163 yards and two touchdowns and Burfeind had 78 yards receiving. Philip Burfeind helped Mayer Lutheran's passing attack out by catching one ball for 25 yards.
Dean Aurich's team's Grimsley and Tanner Luebke have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Grimsley has thrown for 845 yards this season, while Luebke, a 5-foot-6 receiver, has 14 catches for 333 yards. Reinert from the Royals leads the league in rushing with 904 yards.
Watertown-Mayer's Reinert needs only 96 yards against the Crusaders next week to surpass 1,000 rushing yards for the season.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Craig Johnson's team takes on Mayer Lutheran. As it stands, the Royals are in third, while the Crusaders are in second.
There should be lots of points scored when Watertown-Mayer and Mayer Lutheran face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Royals comes in having scored 227 this season, while the Crusaders have scored 253. Watertown-Mayer scored 35 points last week as it beat the Redbirds.
Sibley East extended the longest winning streak in Minnesota River this week by beating Norwood-Young America, 29-19. The victory was the seventh in a row for the team.
