Staples quarterback accounted for over 3,500 yards of total offense and 47 touchdowns.

Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school football. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2023 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence in addition to local and state accolades.

Caleb Smith of Staples (Westport) is the 2023 MaxPreps Connecticut High School Football Player of the Year. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound senior quarterback led the Wreckers to a 12-1 record and Class LL state title.

For the season, Smith threw for 2,008 yards and 21 touchdowns while running for 1,497 yards and 26 more scores.

In a 21-20 win over West Haven in the championship game, Smith accounted for 181 yards and three touchdowns. His efforts helped Staples capture its first state title since 2005 and fourth overall.

In three playoff games, Smith accounted for 667 yards of total offense (285 passing, 382 rushing) and 10 touchdowns.

Smith threw for a season-high 308 yards and five touchdowns in a 51-0 win over Danbury in October. A week prior in a 21-10 win over Stamford, he rushed for a season-best 215 yards and two TDs.

Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team.
