Softball Recap: Incarnate Word Academy Victorious

It may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Incarnate Word Academy ultimately got the result they hoped for on Tuesday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past the Lutheran Cougars 6-5. The win was some much needed relief for the Red Knights as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.

Layla Portis spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and four unearned) runs on nine hits and racked up six Ks.

At the plate, Lauryn Walker was incredible, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one double. The team also got some help courtesy of Makenna Brannam, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Incarnate Word Academy kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post 11 or more hits.

Incarnate Word Academy now has a winning record of 4-3. As for Lutheran, their loss dropped their record down to an identical 4-3.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Incarnate Word Academy will take on Cor Jesu Academy at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Lutheran, they will square off against St. Francis Borgia at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Cougars' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Knights have averaged an impressive 9.8 runs per game this season.
