Preview: Gregori Jaguars vs. El Capitan Gauchos
Two dominant guards in Veronica Whitten and Avnoor Bains are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Gregori Jaguars will be playing at home against the El Capitan Gauchos at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
After a string of eight wins, Gregori's good fortune finally ran out on Thursday. They fell 50-41 to Downey. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Gregori came into the match with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 406th, while Downey is ranked 1113th).
Meanwhile, El Capitan stacked a 14th blowout win onto their ever-increasing hoard on Thursday. They took their game at home with ease, bagging a 63-23 win over Buhach Colony. The match was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 41-12.
El Capitan's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Bains led the charge by scoring 25 points along with three steals. Bains has been hot recently, having posted 15 or more points the last four times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Madysen Dietz, who scored 14 points along with seven steals.
Gregori's loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 14-9. As for El Capitan, they have been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight contests, which somehow isn't as good as their 17-5 record this season.
Gregori couldn't quite finish off El Capitan in their previous matchup back in December of 2022 and fell 57-55. Thankfully for Gregori, Mya Farr (who scored 20 points along with eight steals) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
