Recap: Mayfield Cubs vs. Providence Pioneers
The Mayfield Cubs suffered their closest loss yet this season on Saturday. They fell just short of Providence by a score of 36-33. Mayfield has struggled against Providence recently, as their contest on Saturday was their eighth consecutive lost matchup.
When it comes to explaining why Mayfield lost, one person who can't be blamed is Kristen Awakuni. Despite the final result, she scored six points along with nine rebounds and five steals. That's the first time this season that Awakuni pulled down eight or more rebounds. Christine Ellis was another key contributor, scoring two points along with eight rebounds and three steals.
Mayfield's defeat dropped their record down to 13-8. As for Providence, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 14-4.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Mayfield on the road again on Tuesday and play against Polytechnic at 5:00 p.m. on January 23rd. As for Providence, they will take on Rio Hondo Prep at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Rio Hondo Prep focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 19 on Friday.
