Football Recap: Carlsbad Takes Down Ranked Lovington

Carlsbad faced Lovington in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. The Cavemen/Cavegirls came out on top in a nail-biter against the Wildcats, sneaking past 31-28. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Cavemen/Cavegirls.

BROCK WRIGHT was nothing short of spectacular: he rushed for 145 yards and two touchdowns. He showed off some serious burst, turning on the afterburners on one carry for 62 yards. EAVEN LEOS got in on the action as well, returning a kick for a touchdown.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Carlsbad was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 230 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since back in September of 2024.

Most of the squad's points came courtesy of special teams, who contributed 19 in total. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of TY YOUNG, who ran a kickoff back for a touchdown.

When it comes to explaining why Lovington lost, don't look at Jayden Gutierrez. Despite the final result, he picked up 98 receiving yards and a pair of TDs, and also threw for 102 yards and two touchdowns. Elijah Rivero did his part for the team as well, scoring a TD off of 98 receiving yards.

Carlsbad now has a winning record of 2-1. As for Lovington, they now have a losing record of 1-2.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Carlsbad will head out to challenge Cibola at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Lovington, they will venture away from home to square off against Roswell at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. This will be the Wildcats' first chance to prove their worth in the conference.
