Two dominant wideouts in Daniel Contreras and Hunter Wright are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Santa Cruz Valley Dust Devils are taking a road trip to face off against the Bisbee Pumas at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Santa Cruz Valley will be strutting in after a victory while Bisbee will be coming in after a defeat.
Santa Cruz Valley got their first taste of in-conference action on Friday and they started things off strong. They took their contest with ease, bagging a 57-15 win over Desert Christian. The game was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point the Dust Devils had established a 29-point advantage.
Santa Cruz Valley didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Carlos Cruz and Adam Montijo. Cruz got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Meanwhile, Bisbee was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap on Friday as they fell 21-16 to Palo Verde. Despite 143 more yards than the Titans, the Pumas couldn't convert that extra yardage to scores.
Although Bisbee took the loss, they still got scores from Wright and Tripp Turner.
While Bisbee came up short, they sure didn't make it easy for Palo Verde: they limited their QB to completion percentage of just 20%. The team can thank Cameron Anderson for the heroic effort on defense: he. Bisbee wasn't nearly as limited: they posted one of 53.3%.
Santa Cruz Valley moved to 4-5 with that victory, which also ended their four-game losing streak. As for Bisbee, they dropped their record down to 3-6 with the loss, which was their fourth straight on the road.
Friday's matchup might be decided on the ground. Santa Cruz Valley has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 219.8 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Bisbee struggles in that department as they've been averaging 158.9 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's contest turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Everything went Santa Cruz Valley's way against Bisbee in their previous matchup back in September of 2024, as Santa Cruz Valley made off with a 30-7 win. Will the Dust Devils repeat their success, or do the Pumas have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
