Basketball Recap: Make It Seven in a Row for Arleta

Arleta had already won six in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 30.2 points) and they went ahead and made it seven on Wednesday. They came within four points of losing the streak, but they secured a 44-40 W against the Verdugo Hills Dons. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Mustangs also won the last time the pair played back in January of 2024.

Arleta had a senior duo take command as Victoria Eufracio dropped a double-double on 12 points and 14 rebounds and Justine Mejia dropped a double-double on 15 points and ten boards. Eufracio has been hot recently, having posted nine or more rebounds the last three times she's played. Tatiana Hernandez was another key player, putting up three points and ten boards.

Arleta smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 28 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in 26 consecutive contests dating back to last season.

Verdugo Hills' defeat came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Amiyya Castanos, who went 8 of 16 on her way to 20 points and five rebounds. Another player making a difference was Rayleen Castanos, who posted 12 points in addition to six boards and six steals.

Arleta pushed their record up to 15-6 with the win, which was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season. Those victories came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 24.0 points over those games. As for Verdugo Hills, their loss ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 14-6.

Coincidentally, Arleta and Verdugo Hills will both be playing Poly the next time they take the court. Verdugo Hills will host Poly at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, while Arleta will head out to face them at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
