Sumner entered their tilt with Plant on Friday with two consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with three. They came within four points of losing the streak, but they secured a 28-24 W against the Panthers. That's more bragging rights for the Stingrays, who also won the pair's last head-to-head.
Sumner's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Antonio Balaguer, who threw for 252 yards and a pair of TDs while completing 71.4% of his passes, and also rushed for 47 yards. Another back making a difference was Tommy Scott, who rushed for 88 yards and one touchdown.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Sumner was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 262 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've managed all season.
Sumner's defense stepped up as well, laying out Dillon Rose-Bailey. six times. The heavy lifting was done by Kingston Revels and Robert Garcia, who racked up four sacks between them. Another thorn in Plant's side was Damarion Evans, who picked up a sack, forced one fumble, and made five total tackles (4.0 for loss).
When it comes to explaining why Plant lost, don't look at Rose-Bailey. Despite the final result, he rushed for 91 yards and one score, and also threw for 225 yards and one TD on only 12 passes. Rose-Bailey's longest rush was for an impressive 68 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total. Treon Williams got in on the action as well, returning a kick for a touchdown.
Sumner's victory bumped their record up to 4-1. As for Plant, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 2-3.
Looking ahead, Sumner will be playing at home against Plant City at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The Raiders' defense has only allowed 13.2 points per game this season, so the Stingrays' offense will have their work cut out for them. As for Plant, they will venture away from home to face off against Armwood at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. This will be the Panthers' first chance to prove their worth in the conference.
