Basketball Recap: Gilbert Extends Winning Streak to Six

Gilbert entered their tilt with Higley on Wednesday with five consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with six. They enjoyed a cozy 61-46 win over the Higley Knights. Given the Tigers' advantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked seventh, while the Knights are ranked 48th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Gilbert got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Contessa Ivy out in front who went 7 for 12 on her way to 17 points along with eight rebounds and eight steals. The dominant performance gave Ivy a new career-high in steals. Aspen McClees was another key player, going 9 of 22 en route to 21 points.

Gilbert smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 19 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 19 consecutive games.

Several Knights players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Cadence Murdough, who went 5 for 10 on her way to 10 points and eight boards. Another player making a difference was Claire Greenwade, who posted 13 points in addition to five assists and three steals.

Gilbert is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight contests, which provided a nice bump to their 13-6 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 59.1 points per game. As for Higley, the loss snapped their winning streak at four games and leaves them with a 12-7 record.

Gilbert has already played their next matchup, a 57-22 win against Red Mountain on the 24th. As for Higley, they will square off against Williams Field at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Higley is on a three-game streak of home wins, Williams Field a five-game streak of away wins -- so someone will have to leave a streak behind on the court.
