Preview: NOVA Academy Eagles vs. Costa Mesa Mustangs
The NOVA Academy Eagles will head out on the road to face off against the Costa Mesa Mustangs at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they'll have plenty of motivation to get the 'W'.
Back in December of 2023, NOVA Academy was beaten by Norco 80-31. NOVA Academy was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 43-17.
The losing side was boosted by Valerie Lopez, who scored 18 points. That was a full 58.1% of NOVA Academy's points, marking the fifth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Isabella Torres, who scored 13 points.
Meanwhile, Costa Mesa's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their third straight loss. They fell to Estancia 32-27. Costa Mesa has struggled against Estancia recently, as their match on Tuesday was their third consecutive lost matchup.
Despite the defeat, Costa Mesa saw an underclassman step up: Mya Martinez scored 13 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Martinez has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Leilani Quero, who scored six points.
NOVA Academy has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost three of their last four matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-4 record this season. As for Costa Mesa, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-16.
