Basketball Recap: Standing Bear Starts Season with Win Against Hastings

Standing Bear had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They blew past the Hastings Tigers 57-14 on Friday. The Grizzlies have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Tigers, too.

Leading Standing Bear to victory were Lily Hansmeier and Braylee Vasa. Hansmeier shot 50% from the field on her way to 13 points and seven steals, while Vasa went 6-for-11 to rack up 16 points and six rebounds. Those seven steals gave Hansmeier a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Jada Welton, who posted seven points and five boards.

Standing Bear was working as a unit and finished the game with ten assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Hastings only posted three.

Hastings' defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Hadyn Laux, who scored six points, and Breianna Campbell, who had two points.

Hastings is on a 12-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-2.

Looking ahead, Standing Bear will face off against Kearney at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday. As for Hastings, they will take on Lincoln Northwest at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
