Recap: Fairfax Lions vs. Bernstein Dragons
It was a good run, but the Fairfax Lions unfortunately witnessed the end of their five-game winning streak on Saturday. They fell 67-55 to Bernstein. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Despite the defeat, Fairfax saw an underclassman step up: Alyssa McKenzie dropped a double-double on 24 points and 32 rebounds. McKenzie is absolutely dominating the rebound category: she's posted at least eight every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Desiree Gage, who scored six points along with six steals and five assists.
Even though they lost, Fairfax were working as a unit and finished the game with 11 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.
Odali Rivera continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Bernstein, scoring 45 points. That makes it three consecutive games in which Rivera has scored at least a third of Bernstein's points. Stephanie Ferreira was another key contributor, scoring eight points.
Fairfax's defeat dropped their record down to 6-4. As for Bernstein, they have been performing well recently as they've won nine of their last 11 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 11-4 record this season.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Fairfax and Venice will face off at 3:00 p.m. on January 8th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Venice is hoping to put an end to a four-game streak of away losses. As for Bernstein, they will be playing at home against Dorsey at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Dorsey comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 12 points in their last three games, a trend the squad is of course eager to reverse.
