Baseball Recap: Marmion Comes Up Short

Marmion dropped to 7-11 on Tuesday, ending the team's three-game streak of wins at home. They came up short against the Saint Ignatius College Prep Wolfpack, falling 8-1. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Cadets of the 7-1 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in March of 2023.

Marmion got a good showing from Ryan Nierman, who pitched 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Nierman has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Marmion saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Alec Gilsinn, who went 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI. Max Ulbrich also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

As for Saint Ignatius College Prep, their victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 11-8. Considering they have won seven matchups by more than six runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

On Saint Ignatius College Prep's side, they got a great performance from Colin Giles as he struck out seven batters over six innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. The Wolfpack are 5-1 when Giles allows three or fewer earned runs, but 6-7 otherwise.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Connor Hites, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Those three hits gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Quinn Wiedelman, who went 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

While Marmion had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday.
