Minnesota school moves into first place past Hinsdale Central (Ill.), Jesuit (Ore.).
With four state championships and placement in national rankings for three different sports,
Wayzata (Plymouth, Minn.) zoomed to the top of the MaxPreps Cup fall standings, passing previous leader
Hinsdale Central (Hinsdale, Ill.).
The Trojans claimed state championships in boys soccer, boys and girls cross country and girls volleyball. Wayzata is also believed to be the only school in the nation to be ranked in the top 25 of three different sports. The Trojans were No. 9 in girls cross country, No. 13 in boys cross country and No. 14 in girls volleyball to accumulate 1,239 total points.
Last year, Wayzata didn't finish in the Top 100 of the final MaxPreps Cup standings for 2021-22. However, Wayzata was up to No. 7 in the November rankings before moving past Hinsdale Central, which had been the top school in the October and November rankings.
Hinsdale Central comes in at No. 2 with 1,214 points while
Jesuit (Portland, Ore.) is No. 3 at 1,123 and
Noblesville (Ind.) is No. 4 with 1,063 points.
The MaxPreps Cup is a formula devised to determine the top overall high school athletic programs in the country. The algorithm awards points for state championships and runner-up finishes along with placement in national rankings. Points are awarded based on size of state, popularity of sport, playoff enrollment division and the number of participants in an enrollment division.
The fall season rankings only include championships and national rankings for sports played during the fall season.
