Basketball Recap: St. Monica Takes a Loss

St. Monica has been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. They were six points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 70-64 heartbreaker at the hands of the San Dimas Saints. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Mariners came into the matchup with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 48th, while the Saints are ranked 254th).

San Dimas' win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Robene Mercado, who posted 14 points along with five boards and three steals. That's the most steals Mercado has posted since back in December of 2024. Another player making a difference was Anelly Alba, who put up 14 points in addition to six assists and five steals.

St. Monica's loss dropped their record down to 18-7. As for San Dimas, the victory (which was their tenth in a row) raised their record to 16-8.

St. Monica has already played their next game (against St. Mary's Academy), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. San Dimas will look to defend their home court on Monday against Colony at 5:00 p.m. One thing working in San Dimas' favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last six contests.
