Basketball Game Preview: La Jolla Vikings vs. Mt. Carmel Sundevils

The La Jolla Vikings will head out on the road to square off against the Mt. Carmel Sundevils at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. La Jolla will be strutting in after a victory while Mt. Carmel will be coming in after a defeat.

Having struggled with three losses in a row, La Jolla turned things around against Hoover on Tuesday. They managed a 57-51 win over the Cardinals.

La Jolla's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Reagan Bennett, who posted 19 points. What's more, Bennett also racked up four assists, the most she's had since back in November of 2024. Another player making a difference was Drew Bennett, who put up 12 points along with seven boards and five assists.

La Jolla smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 24 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in 19 consecutive matchups.

Meanwhile, Mt. Carmel played a tough contest on Friday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They lost 71-46 to San Marcos. The Sundevils have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

La Jolla pushed their record up to 14-9 with the win, which was their fourth straight on the road. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 54.5 points per game. As for Mt. Carmel, their defeat dropped their record down to 10-10.

La Jolla was dealt a bruising 60-19 loss at the hands of Mt. Carmel when the teams last played back in December of 2019. Can La Jolla avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
