Football Recap: Journey Thompson Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Perry Meridian

Mooresville lost to Perry Meridian back in October of 2024, but they didn't allow them the same satisfaction on Friday. The Pioneers blew past the Falcons 42-21. Considering the Pioneers have won three games by more than 20 points this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Mooresville to victory, but perhaps none more so than Journey Thompson, who picked up 283 receiving yards and four touchdowns. Thompson really caught the secondary sleeping when he pulled down a catch that went for 78 yards. Another passer making a difference was Connor Cruz, who threw for 225 yards and four TDs on only 18 passes.

Mooresville's defense stepped up as well, laying out Jackson Schoch seven times. The heavy lifting was done by Landyn Powell and Jonathan Tyner, who racked up five sacks between them. Tyner also made four total tackles, which is notable because Mooresville is 4-2 when he posts at least three total tackles, but 1-2 otherwise.

Despite the loss, Perry Meridian still got an impressive performance from Schoch, who rushed for 83 yards and one score on only 11 carries, and also threw for 154 yards and one touchdown. The Falcons also got a significant boost from Daniel Johnson, who ran away from the competition to the tune of 102 yards.

Mooresville now has a winning record of 5-4. As for Perry Meridian, they dropped their record down to 2-7 with the defeat, which was their third straight at home.

Mooresville and Perry Meridian could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Indiana Rankings. The Pioneers (ranked 64th) will meet Indianapolis Bishop Chatard (ranked 12th) at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Perry Meridian will challenge Warren Central at 7:00 p.m. on the 31st with a big rank disadvantage (126 vs. 15).
