Basketball Recap: Maya Marmolejo's Big Game Can't Quite Lead JW North over Canyon Springs

JW North lost against Canyon Springs back in December of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Thursday. The JW North Huskies received a blow as they fell 45-30 to the Canyon Springs Cougars. While losing is never fun, the Huskies can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 1132nd, while the Cougars are ranked 417th).

JW North's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Maya Marmolejo, who posted 11 points. Marmolejo is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last three games she's played. Avery Aguilar was another key player, putting up eight points and three steals.

Even though they lost, JW North smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in six consecutive matches.

Canyon Springs found their leader in sophomore Rosalinda Aparicio, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and 13 boards. That's the most rebounds Aparicio has posted since back in December of 2023. The team also got some help courtesy of Savannah Jones, who put up eight points.

JW North has traveled a rocky road recently having lost nine of their last 11 games, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-14 record this season. As for Canyon Springs, the win was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 15-3.

JW North has already played their next contest (against Rancho Verde), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. Canyon Springs will venture away from home to challenge Hemet at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Canyon Springs is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 54.9 points per game this season.
