Basketball Recap: La Costa Canyon Takes a Loss

After flying high against Sage Creek last Friday, La Costa Canyon came back down to earth. The La Costa Canyon Mavericks took a 52-38 bruising from the Oceanside Pirates on Wednesday. The defeat continues a trend for the Mavericks in their matchups with the Pirates: they've now lost three in a row.

When it comes to explaining why La Costa Canyon lost, don't look at Keani Brown. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double with 15 points and 14 boards. Brown has become a key player for La Costa Canyon: the team is 6-3 when she posts at least ten rebounds, but 6-12 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Izzy Alexander, who posted ten points in addition to five boards and four steals.

Even though they lost, La Costa Canyon smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 14 offensive boards in three consecutive contests.

Oceanside found their leader in sophomore Kaitlyn Kaye, who went 7-for-15 en route to 22 points and seven rebounds. Kaye also brought in his first three-point shooting accuracy of the season. Brooklynn Davis was another key player, going 5-for-9 to rack up 11 points and five boards.

La Costa Canyon's loss dropped their record down to 12-15. As for Oceanside, their victory bumped their record up to 12-13.

La Costa Canyon has already played their next match, a 44-32 defeat against Torrey Pines on the 14th. As for Oceanside, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 53-47 loss against Carlsbad on the 14th.
