Basketball Recap: Centennial's Luck Takes a Turn for the Worse on Thursday

After flying high against Stockdale last Tuesday, Centennial came back down to earth. The Centennial Golden Hawks took a 51-41 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Frontier Titans on Thursday. The Golden Hawks' defeat signaled the end of their five-game winning streak.

When it comes to explaining why Centennial lost, don't look at Aubrey Baldoz. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 14 points and ten rebounds. The dominant performance gave Baldoz a new career-high in points. Laker Shaw was another key player, putting up 12 points and seven boards.

Even though they lost, Centennial smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 21 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 17 offensive boards in seven consecutive contests.

Frontier's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Alexis Tinnin, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 19 rebounds. Tinnin is on a roll when it comes to boards, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Lailene Araniva, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Centennial's loss was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 4-1 and their overall record down to 13-6. As for Frontier, they are on a roll lately: they've won 15 of their last 16 matches, which provided a massive bump to their 16-6 record this season.

Centennial has already played their next game, a 48-42 win against Bakersfield Christian on the 25th. As for Frontier, they will venture away from home to take on Stockdale at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Stockdale has a tough task ahead: they'll enter the contest with three straight defeats, while Frontier will come in with seven straight victories.
