Basketball Game Preview: Valley Lutheran Flames vs. The Gregory School Hawks

Valley Lutheran hasn't had much luck against The Gregory School recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Valley Lutheran Flames will host The Gregory School Hawks at 7:00 p.m. Both teams are coming into the matchup red-hot, with Valley Lutheran sitting on ten straight victories and The Gregory School on five.

Valley Lutheran is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Friday. They took down Music Mountain 56-39. Given the Flames' advantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 150th, while the Warriors are ranked 316th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Valley Lutheran had a senior duo take command as Caynan Chapman dropped a double-double with 16 points and ten rebounds and Caleb Doyle went 6-for-13 to rack up 16 points. The game was Chapman's seventh in a row with at least 16 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Gary Yang, who posted eight points and six boards.

Meanwhile, The Gregory School posted their closest win since December 11, 2024 on Tuesday. They skirted past Baboquivari 45-42.

Valley Lutheran pushed their record up to 20-3 with the victory, which was their 11th straight at home. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 58.5 points over those games. As for The Gregory School, their win bumped their record up to 18-10.

Valley Lutheran came up short against The Gregory School in their previous matchup back in February of 2018, falling 69-56. Thankfully for Valley Lutheran, Addison Mort (who dropped a double-double with 27 points and ten rebounds) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
