Basketball Game Preview: Monterey Trail Mustangs vs. Elk Grove Thundering Herd

Monterey Trail hasn't had much luck against Elk Grove recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Monterey Trail Mustangs will welcome the Elk Grove Thundering Herd at 6:00 p.m. Elk Grove took a loss in their last contest and will be looking to turn the tables on Monterey Trail, who comes in off a win.

Last Wednesday, Monterey Trail strolled past Sheldon with points to spare, taking the game 71-55. The Mustangs pushed the score to 61-36 by the end of the third, a deficit the Huskies cut but never quite recovered from.

Meanwhile, after a string of three wins, Elk Grove's good fortune finally ran out on Wednesday. They lost 53-33 to Laguna Creek. While losing is never fun, the Thundering Herd can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 976th, while the Cardinals are ranked 415th).

Monterey Trail pushed their record up to 7-5 with the win, which was their fourth straight on the road. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 67.0 points per game. As for Elk Grove, their loss dropped their record down to 5-7.

Monterey Trail strolled past Elk Grove in their previous matchup back in December of 2019 by a score of 62-47. Will Monterey Trail repeat their success, or does Elk Grove have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
