Basketball Recap: Leuzinger Takes a Tough Playoff Loss

It's hard to turn regular season success into postseason wins, a fact Leuzinger can now relate to. They took a 70-62 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Verdugo Hills Dons on Tuesday. While losing is never fun, the Olympians can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 374th, while the Dons are ranked 139th).

Leuzinger's loss came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Tatyana Aubry, who shot 50% from the field on her way to 15 points and four steals. The contest was Aubry's 13th in a row with at least 15 points. Sovereign Woods was another key player, putting up 17 points and five boards.

Even though they lost, Leuzinger smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their offensive rebound total in three consecutive matchups.

Rayleen Castanos continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Verdugo Hills, going 14-for-26 en route to 28 points along with six rebounds and three blocks. With that strong performance, Castanos is now averaging an impressive 15.3 points per game. Another player making a difference was Elaine Oh, who posted ten points and five assists.

Leuzinger's defeat dropped their record down to 18-16. As for Verdugo Hills, the win was the 12th in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 26-6.

Leuzinger does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Verdugo Hills, they will look to defend their home court on Thursday against Gahr at 7:30 p.m. Verdugo Hills is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 53.3 points per game this season.
