Recap: Mar Vista Mariners vs. Montgomery Aztecs
The Mar Vista Mariners lost against the Montgomery Aztecs back in February of 2022, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Wednesday. Mar Vista was beaten by Montgomery 68-19. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Mar Vista in their matchups with Montgomery: they've now lost eight in a row.
Mar Vista's loss came despite strong showings from Allyson Bell and Anissa Smith. Bell scored eight points, while Smith scored seven points. Smith scored a full 36.8% of Mar Vista's points, the fifth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Leading Montgomery to victory were Paula Zumstein and Jordan Whitehead. Zumstein scored 13 points along with seven rebounds and four steals, while Whitehead scored 20 points along with five steals. The game was Zumstein's fourth in a row with at least ten points. Genevieve Whitehead was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with three steals.
Mar Vista now has a losing record at 2-3. As for Montgomery, their win bumped their record up to 6-8.
Mar Vista will be staying on the road on Thursday to face off against Escondido Charter at 9:30 a.m. on December 28th. Escondido Charter is coming into the matchup on a three-game losing streak. Montgomery will finish 2023 at home by hosting Central at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.
