Baseball Recap: Windham Whippets vs. Plainfield Panthers

Windham extended their losing streak to 11 on Monday, dropping them down to 1-16. They took a 9-6 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Plainfield Panthers. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Panthers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 16-5 back in April.

Windham got a big performance out of Alex Saurez, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. Brandon Holman was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.

As for Plainfield, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 7-12. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 7 runs in those games.

On Plainfield's side, Kaison Mayernik made a splash no matter where he played. He struck out seven batters over six innings while giving up three earned (and three unearned) runs off five hits. That's the most strikeouts Mayernik has posted since back in April. He was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three runs and one double. He is becoming a predictor of Plainfield's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 3-12 when he doesn't).

In other pitching news, Carson Lavallee looked comfortable as he tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits.

Back at the plate, Jace Arriaga and Shane Gregoire did most of the damage at the plate: Arriaga went 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double, while Gregoire went 1-for-3 with one triple and one run. That triple marked the first that Gregoire has hit this season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Windham will welcome Ellis RVT at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Plainfield, they will face off against Norwich Free Academy at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Wildcats will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each matchup than the last.
