Basketball Recap: Montebello Comes Up Short

Montebello played a tough match on Friday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They were outmatched by the Bell Gardens Lancers and fell 61-21. Sadly, that's the second time they've come up short against the Oilers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 63-18 two weeks ago.

Bell Gardens' win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Giselle Ocegueda, who went 10 of 18 en route to 24 points and six steals. The dominant performance gave Ocegueda a new career-high in points. Eliza Villalobos was another key player, dropping a double-double on 15 points and ten boards.

Montebello's loss was their 13th straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 1-12. As for Bell Gardens, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 8-17.

Montebello and Bell Gardens could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps California Rankings. Montebello (ranked 1195th) will meet Schurr (ranked 463rd) at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. Meanwhile, Bell Gardens will face off against Mark Keppel at 6:30 p.m. on Monday down 731 places (910 vs. 179).
