Baseball Recap: Grovetown Drops Highest Score of Season Against Rockdale County

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Grovetown). They put the hurt on the Rockdale County Bulldogs with a sharp 13-3 victory on Thursday. The win continues a trend for the Warriors in their matchups with the Bulldogs: they've now won nine in a row.

Brodie Combs made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He is becoming a predictor of Grovetown's success: when he allows at most one hit the team is 2-1 (and 10-12 when he doesn't). Combs was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.

In other batting news, Grovetown got a massive performance out of Jake Maldonado, who went 2-for-3 with five RBI and two runs. That's the most runs Maldonado has posted since back in February. Noah Riggs was another key player, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3.

Grovetown hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post two or more strikeouts.

Grovetown's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 12-13. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Rockdale County, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 9-17 record this season.

Grovetown and Rockdale County will both get a bit of extra prep time before their next matches. The next time the Warriors see the field they'll take on Heritage at 5:55 p.m. on the 15th. As for Rockdale County, their break will end when they face Central Gwinnett at 5:30 p.m. on the 14th.
